ARLINGTON STADIUM, ARLINGTON, TEXAS -- Baseball's all-time strikeout king, Nolan Ryan, still going strong at age 44, took the hill against the Blue Jays and made history by notching the 7th no-hit game of his illustrious career.

It had been nearly 18 years since Ryan had first notched a no-hitter and the pitcher had seemingly changed little over that time. He was still a fireballer, reaching the upper 90s with his fastball. He still had a wicked curveball, buckling the knees of major league hitters just as frequently as it had in 1973. Most of all, Ryan remained one of the game's greatest competitors.
The Blue Jays' lineup was no cakewalk - this was a team which would go on to win the AL East in 1991 and then go back-to-back as World Champions in '92 & '93. Among the hitters facing Ryan would be such established sluggers as Joe Carter and young, up-and-coming players such as Roberto Alomar. It wouldn't matter.
Ryan faced just two more than the minimum of 27 batters, walking Kelly Gruber and Carter (control was never Ryan's greatest weapon). But he dominated the Jays, striking out 16, with Alomar being the final victim.
Ryan punched out Devon White, Alomar, and Glenallen Hill three times apiece and struck out every player in the Jays' order at least once.
The Ryan Express would chug on for two more seasons, finishing up in 1993 with a 324-292 lifetime record, a staggering 5,714 strikeouts (along with 2,795 free passes) and a pre-punched ticket to Cooperstown.
